Steel Information

Steel Product Specification

01

KS

Korea Standards

KS is the national standards established by the Government according to Industrial Standardization Act. It is classified into 10 section and the steel products are included in the section Metal. In addition, KS adopts the KS mark system that the quality level and processing technology of specific product are guaranteed in the governmental level. Steel and metal section is identified with 'D' (example: KS D 0000)

02

ASTM

American Society for Testing and Materials

It is the famous standards in the world and composed of industrial material standards and test method standards. As a manual book, it is published by dividing 15 sections. The steel products are contained in Volumn 1-7 and 'A' is affixed in front of standard No. and the number represents the type of individual steel.

03

JIS

JapanIndustrial Standard

JIS is the national standards of Japan enacted according to Japanese Industrial Standardization Acts is composed of 18 sections and the steel is part of them. JIS operates the JIS mark labelling rule as well as KS mark labelling and the Steel and Metal section is marked with 'G'. (Example: JIS0000)

04

AISI

AmericanIron and Steel Institute

As the standards of American Iron and Steel Institute, the steel type sign representing chemical composition is used the most and is commonly used together with SAE number. (Example: ANSI 1050(carbon steel): first two digits: steel type and last two digits: average amount of carbon)

05

ASME

AmericanSociety of Mechanical Engineers

Standards of Amercian Society of Mechanical Engineers. It enacts lots of standards regarding machines and there are registered in ANSI, and particularly, for the materials used for nuclear power plant, it adopted ASME certification system for the facility stability. The most famous standard is Oiler and Presser Vessel Code.

06

DIN

DeutscherNormenausschus

It is the national standards enacted by DINA (Deutsche Indutric Norme). It does not have classification by section but it puts the serial number to entire standards and classifies with universal decimal classification. The standards regarding the steel are quality standards, size standards, general standards, test standards and supply standards. (Example: DIN17100-80: Steel material for genneral structure)

07

SAE

Societyof Automotive Engineers

As a collective standards defined on the materials and parts related automobile enacted by Society of Automotive Engineers, it is wide range of standardized subjects and there are many standards of ASTM, AISI, etc. quoted in SAE. Steel type symbol system is as same as AISI.

08

API

AmericanPetroleum Institute

Standards of American Petroleum Institute. It promoted the standardization regarding the petroleum and has a number in every section and enacted the line pipe for petroleum transport, steel pipe for oil well (casing & tubing) (Example API 5L X70: high-strength steel pipe more than 70 Ksi of resistance for petroleum transport

09

UL

UnderwritersLaboratory

As the test standards of American Underwriters, it certified about 2,500 products for the purpose of safe product and public service under the Delaware State law in 1894. For the steel standard symbol, ASTM standards are applied.

10

NF

NormFrancaise

As a national standard of France, the major classification sign is represented with alphabet and for the steel standard sign, A is used. (Example: NF A35-501-87 ; Steel material for structure)

11

BS

BritishStandards

As the national standards enacted by British Standards Institution, it is classified into 5 type and for the steel, BS General Series puts serial number in the order of enactment without classification.(Example: BS4360-86 : Steel material for welding structure)

12

ISO

InternationalOrganization for Standardization

There is ISO (International Organization for Standardization) for the international cooperation of intellectual and economic activities. It is composed of representative standardization institute of each country and is reviewing the international standards. The standard are marked with serial number affixed with enactment year. (Example : ISO 4975-78 : Hot rolled steel pipe for structure)
